It’s time to check-out the most popular cat names for this year. Okay, let’s start with some popular Italian names from Daily Italian Words. This is lo svago — fun!

What are you going to name me?

Pallina (female) Pallino (male) means small ball, like a toy, in Italian

Luna, or moon in Italian. Like the moon, cats are mysterious, beautiful and nocturnal.

Birba is perfect for your mischievous kitten. Italian adults call mischievous or naughty children birba.

Trilly (also spelled Trilli) is the Italian name for Tinkerbell, the beloved character in Peter Pan. Oddly enough, it’s very popular in Italy. Guess Tinkerbell in any language is just so cute.

Bella, Italian for beautiful and popular in Italy and around the world.

My favorite is this one: Briciolina (female ) Bricionlino (male). They are affectionate derivatives from briciola, meaning crumb (usually said of bread or a cookie) or a small amount of something. Really cute.

STUPENDO!

Some more popular 2021 cat names

One of the sources for the list of the most popular cat names is from the Cat Fanciers Association, an organization with the world’s largest registry of pedigreed cats. Then there’s an actual site called FindCatNames.com, plus other random searches. But the consensus seems pretty consistent.

To conclude the Italian favorites, Rocky is a diminutive of the Italian name Rocco for your wise guy cat.

Oliver is on just about every list of the most popular cat names. And, Oliver just happens to be the #3 most popular male baby name in the United States.

Simba is Swahili for lion, made famous from The Lion King. Nala is another popular name from The Lion King, for a girl cat.

Chloe has been a popular female kitty name for several years. Cute yet sophisticated.

Max is a name that remains on the list year after year. Our friend and cat sitter of many many years had a beloved cat Max. Max continues to be a cool and favorite name.

Girl cat names like Lucy and Lily continue to be popular. They’re cute and sweet, and are perfect for cute, sweet kittens.

Sophia is really popular for both babies and cats. It’s a pretty and elegant name.

The 1986 Japanese film The Adventures of Milo and Otis introduced the world to the now popular name Milo. In the movie, Milo was an orange tabby, his pal Otis was a pug.

This is not a photograph of Milo, but he is an adorable orange tabby.

Tiger is obvious for your striped orange tabby. According to the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) breed registry, Tiger is the 5th most popular cat name in China. I prefer Tigger, from Winnie-the-Pooh. It’s goofier — although no cat would ever admit to being goofy, some are endearingly so.

Coco is big in the USA, but even bigger in…China, where, according to the CFA, it is the third most popular name for cats registered with the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association.)

Charlie had been a very popular name in the United States for late 19th century human parents. Then it lost favor. However, Charlie has been revived as a popular cat name.

Smokey is used for grey cats, and that’s about it. Unless you’re a Highway Patrol guy.

It’s popular for some people to name their grey cat Shadow because he/she follows them around. I don’t get it — wouldn’t it be better for a black cat who follows you around?

Mia is like a little meow.

Jack is a name like Max: determined, confident, as if ready to pounce. People once used Jack as a diminutive of John, but eventually it gained ground on its own. Over the centuries (it’s an old name) it continually went in and out of favor. As for your cat, Jack is a name of choice for cat parents.

Those who have an inclination to baby talk to your cat may lapse into “precious Angel,” “sweet Angel” or something like that. Hence Angel is popular. Not a criticism, in fact, totally acceptable.

Oreo is popular with people who live with black & white cats. A delectable name. Another food related name popular for cats is Biscuit. Not really sure why.

Once, Felix was a popular name for boys. It’s Latin meaning lucky, happy, successful. The name isn’t common anymore, but for cats, it has been for over a century. Thanks to the cartoon character Felix the Cat, created by Pat Sullivan, Otto Messmer and Joe Oriolo. Felix the Cat was first seen in 1919, in Feline Follies. Since then, Felix is a popular and loved name full of fun, smarts and pizazz. My Kitty Care loves Felix!

Felix the Cat, the wonderful wonderful cat…

A relatively new popular name is Willow. If I had a Ragdoll cat, I’d consider naming him/her Willow — droopy, like a Willow tree.

Names like Molly, Sammy or Gracie are both popular and personable.

Gizmo is something undefinable, but has a presence. Possibly inspired from the 1980s movie, Gremlins. This name makes me think of a cat who runs around a lot — not for any particular reason, you just know your cat Gizmo is around.

What Is Jasper Stone Good For? - Beadnova

I like the name Jasper, and apparently so do many others. It has a friendly authority to it. Some cat parents may name their cat Jasper because the gemstone Jasper, is a spotted gemstone that might remind you of your cat’s coat or eyes.

Bailey is popular as a drink, and now as a cat name. If your cat is the color of the Irish cream beverage, Bailey may come to mind.

Loki is a rascally demigod from Norse mythology, known for making trouble. Absolutely applicable to many a cat.

Sasha is a Russian nickname for girls named Aleksandra, If your cat’s furry brow always looks Dostoevsky serious, perhaps Sasha is a good choice.

Simon and Toby aren’t as popular for people anymore, but are for cats. Toby is derived from the original Tobias, going back to the Old Testament. One of my cats is a Toby. He’s such a Toby. He just is.

Cloe is a classic reference to Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, a culture known to revere cats. Cleo is great for a dignified, royal cat. And just about any cat can be viewed as royal.

Peanut is popular but ought to be reserved for a small, so adorable you want-to-eat-them cats. Especially if they have a nutty personality.

Finally, there’s Leo. It’s Latin for lion, is the fifth sign of the Zodiac, and even has it’s own Leo the Lion constellation. It’s such a loaded name, of course it’s understandable that it’s popular, even in China.

Found this list from 2018. And guess what, it looks mighty familiar.

  1. Luna
  2. Oliver
  3. Bella
  4. Lucy
  5. Charlie
  6. Chloe
  7. Leo
  8. Max
  9. Lily
  10. Milo

And look at this one: popular cat names from 2016
All great names, but I think we need to add new fun ones…2022?

about COVID-19 and my cat

knowledge about COVID-19 (coronavirus) keeps changing, as scientists, medical professionals, and other experts continue to figure out and update their information about this new disease. Our responsibilities are to comply with coronavirus guidelines, and be constantly attentive to new information, as the experts discover it,

Should I worry about CODIV-19 and my cat

Yet another thing I worried about with this awful disease, was my cats, especially after hearing about a dog in Hong Kong getting infected. I researched, and posted my cats and coronavirus, on March 15

Yesterday, April 5, news was released about an infected tiger in The Bronx Zoo, the flagship park of the Wildlife Conservation Society. The WCS said the four-year old Malaysian tiger, Nadia, tested positive for COVID-19.

Only Nadia was tested, but Nadia’s sister Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions, also had a dry cough, and the zoo is assuming they are also infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Turns out, a zoo caretaker had COVID-19, before his or her symptoms presented, and likely infected the cats. The infected cats have a decreased appetite, but otherwise, are doing well. The WCS described the cats as, “bright, alert and interactive with their keepers.”
Vets at the zoo are tending and monitoring the sick cats. Happily, they’re all expected to recover, according to the WCS.

The infected cats are housed with other cats, who show no symptoms. Nor do the cats throughout the zoo, including snow leopards, cheetahs, a puma, serval, and a clouded leopard. That’s a really good thing, since it’s unknown how COVID-19 exposure could effect big cats, especially since different species may react differently to this new disease. Measures are now in place at the zoo for staff to prevent further exposure to the other cats, the WCS said.

Can my cat get sick?

On March 27, a domestic cat in Belgium was infected with COVID-19, caused by the new coronavirus, according to the government’s FPS Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment. It’s the first human-to-cat transmission.

“About a week after its owner got sick with COVID-19, after returning from a trip to Northern Italy, the cat developed coronavirus symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting and respiratory issues, Domestic cats seem to have a receptor protein on the outsides of respiratory cells, similar to the human counterpart involved in SARS-CoV-2 infections. Called ACE2, this receptor protein is what allows the virus to break into these cells and multiply. The feline ACE2 protein resembles the human ACE2 homologue, which is most likely the cellular receptor which is being used by SARS-CoV-2 for cell entry.”

Steven Van Gucht, virologist and federal spokesperson for the coronavirus epidemic in Belgium

Translated: I think it means, because domestic cats have a protein outside of their respiratory cells, similar to ours, they may be susceptible to human coronavirus. If you are sick, or think you might be infected, take care with your cat. Wear a mask when replenishing fresh water, preparing cat food, even cleaning kitty litter. Remember, when you pet your cat, as fastidious groomers, they may lick contamination into their little bodies. Precaution is good, over-precautious is best. Just my advice.

Meanwhile, there continues to be NO evidence of cat to human transmission, as stated in research papers by two different scientists, who did significant investigation on COVID-19, the coronavirus.

One of the authors is Hualan Chen, of Harbin Veterinary Research Institute, the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences. The scientist described how SARA-CoV-2 was transmitted between cats in their respiratory droplets. Another authority, published in medrXiv, found that of 102 cats tested in Wuhan, nearly 15% had antibodies to the virus, suggesting they contracted the virus from humans or other cats. Again, both experts stated NO evidence has been found that cats can transmit the virus to humans.

Be safe. Practice all hygienic recommendations, for yourself, your cats and other family members, friends, community and our country.

Can my cat get coronavirus disease?

Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is a common viral infection in cats. It generally causes an asymptomatic infection, but can give some cats mild diarrhea.
FCoV should not be confused with the coronavirus pandemic causing havoc around the world. The feline version Is only transmitted between cats; people can not be infected. It is unrelated to the current human coronavirus.

The World Organisation for Animal Health adds the following:

The current spread of COVID-19 is a result of human to human transmission. To date, there is no evidence that companion animals can spread the disease. Therefore, there is no justification in taking measures against companion animals which may compromise their welfare.

according to the World Organization.for Animal Health

The predominant route of transmission of COVID-19 appears to be from human to human.

As for the reported dog in Hong Kong infected with coronavirus:

A spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said that a pet dog had tested a weak positive to COVID-19 virus. All indications result in, contamination between dogs or cats and people, are non-existent. The lone dog seemed to have gotten it from it’s owner. But the dog has no symptoms, but was quarantined anyway.
it’s recommended to practice the same hygiene as between humans, and apply it to our cats when we interact with them: wash our hands, don’t sneeze or cough on them. Common sense stuff, really.

The important thing is to be prepared. When stocking up on food, toiletries and medications, make sure that likewise, prepare for your cats. Have enough cat food, kitty litter, and medications if your cat requires them, for at least two weeks, or more.

The World Health Organization has said that there is no evidence that companion animals or pets such as cats and dogs have been infected or could spread the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease.

To conclude, cats are apparently neither capable of giving or getting coronavirus. But, as always, take care of your cats. ??
