new state law for cat declawing

New law for cats

Onychectomy, or declawing, is legal in the USA except in a few places like Denver, CO. In 2017 Denver prohibited declawing, and in 2010 so did the municipalities Berkley, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Culver City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Monica. Now, there’s a new state law for cats. New York became the first state in the USA to outlaw declawing. Governor Cuomo signed the ban into law on June 4, 2019.

It is a controversial procedure and for good reason. Do you know what declawing really is? Click here about declawing to read the actual description of what declawing is and how it effects the cat.

One of the controversies about declawing is that by not having the option to declaw could minimize how many cats get adopted from shelters, because furniture scratching is major complaint against having cats. The argument against that is: if your furniture is more important than your cat, maybe you shouldn’t have a cat in the first place.

The following countries already banned or the practice is viewed as extremely inhuman and performed only under extreme circumstances:

England
Scotland
Wales
Italy
Austria
Switzerland
Norway
Sweden
Ireland
Denmark
Finland
Slovenia
Brazil
Australia
New Zealand
Serbia
Montenegro
Macedonia
Slovenia
France
Germany
Bosnia
Malta
Netherlands
Northern Ireland
Portugal

Let’s hope the USA is added to the list.

Sad news Grumpy Cat

Sad news

GRUMPY CAT, international nternet star, died May 14, 2019 from complications of a urinary tract infection. She was 7 years old.

Grumpy Cat’s real name was Tardar Sauce. She lived in Morristown, Arizona with her family, the Bundesens.

A statement released by the family said, “She passed away peacefully, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.”

Grumpy Cat developed her distinct “grumpy” expression due to an underbite and feline dwarfism. This condition is either intentionally bred into the cat or is caused genectically by an underactive pituitary gland.

FDA recalls 9 Lives cat food

According to the FDA, posted 1/3/2017

Orrville, OH – The J.M. Smucker Company today announced a limited voluntary recall on certain lots of 9LivesTM, EverPetTM, and Special KittyTM canned cat food due to possible low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1). The issue was discovered by the Quality Assurance team during review of production records at the manufacturing facility. No illnesses related to this issue have been reported to date and the product is being recalled out of an abundance of caution.

Cats fed diets low in thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which include ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these symptoms. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.

cat lovers board game

Cat lovers (maybe some Monoploly lovers too) will be thrilled to know that they’ve been heard: a company has created a ‘Cat-opoly’ board game, the cat lovers board game.

In 2013, Hasbro, the makers of Monopoly, replaced the dated “iron” marker with a cat! Worldwide, cat lovers were thrilled, animal lovers pleased.Monopoly cat marker

But cat lovers wanted more.

Cat-opoly board game

Monopoly? No, better than that: Cat-opoly!

A US company ‘Late for the sky” has now created Cat-opoly, an entire board   game that’s all about cats.

Ready to play?

Instead of buying properties, like in Monopoly, players compete against each other in Cat-opoly

  • to purchase cat breeds, which increase in price as one advances around the board.

Rather than purchasing houses

  • players shell out for litter boxes and then can opt to trade them in for fish bones.

Instead of players going to jail

  • experience something that most cats (pretend you’re a Turkish Van, who loves to swim) don’t appreciate – getting thrown into water!

Now let’s play Cat-opoly!

National Cat Day!

October 29, 2015 say Happy National Cat Day!

at My Kitty Care, every day is Cat Day, but today is a reminder to look at our cats, pick them up and give them hugs and kisses and remember how fortunate we are to have our wonderful cats as family members.

In addition, National Cat Day is most importantly a day to promote and encourage people to adopt and rescue all pets, especially cats, who wait for a caring home, for someone to hold and love them.

Cats are waiting in non-kill shelters, stressed but lucky, or feral cats hungry and waiting out a cold winter, or cats crammed in shelters waiting to be euthanized. I would emphasize that today is also an opportunity to remind people about the importance of spaying and neutering our own cats, as well as feral cats that need to be humanely trapped to receive veterinary services including spaying and neutering.
